Is Global Warming Real? 5 Proofs That Urge Action

Global warming and climate change have been the focus of controversy and debate for nearly half a century – Is global warming real? What causes climate change – is it man made? Should we do something? What can we do?

What is Global Warming?

Atmospheric gases (primarily water vapor but also including carbon dioxide, methane, ozone, etc.) work together to retain some of the sun’s heat so that the earth stays a comfortable climate – this is known as the greenhouse effect and is necessary for human life. Climate change – long term changes in the overall climate of a particular region – can also occur naturally. The Ice Age, for example, is thought to be a natural change in the global climate. Some believe this was caused by a change in the distance between the earth and the sun, or a change in the earth’s orbital path, while others believe this climate change may have came about because of meteorites.

According to temperature records over the past 150 years, the average global temperature has risen at least one degree overall and more than 2 degrees specifically in the arctic. Scientists have also discovered a correlation between these temperatures and the level of carbon dioxide (and more recently methane gas) in the atmosphere.

In a perfect world, the trees and plants would balance the carbon dioxide levels in the air and a natural animal population would emit just the right amount of methane and CO2 to keep the atmosphere and climate in check.

In our world – we’ve removed vast amounts of vegetation to make space for structures that operate on polluting fossil fuels; we degrade land by breeding huge herds of methane-emitting cattle to feed our growing population; we manufacture products using processes that create even more gases. Our normal habits have altered the gas balance of our atmosphere, retaining more heat than ever before, and is considered to be the man made side of global warming and the current climate change.

Is Global Warming Real?

We’ve examined this question in a previous post, Global Warming: Fact or Fiction. Whether man made or natural, can anyone truly argue the fact that climates are changing around the world? Yes, global warming is real – Britain’s National Academy of Science states:

“The world’s leading climate experts at the Nobel Prize-winning Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change believe that it is greater than 90 per cent likely that human activity is responsible for most of the observed warming in recent decades. That is a pretty strong consensus.”

Global Warming Proof

“Global warming will intensify drought and it will intensify floods,” states Stephen Schneider, editor of the Climatic Change journal. 2007 brought some of the worst floods in history to a number of countries around the planet – including 14 African countries, the UK, Malaysia, the US midwest, and North Korea. Droughts and water shortages have been just as prominent in recent years – plaguing areas of the Middle East, the southeastern US, Spain, and Australia.

The longtime dream route between Europe and Asia, the Northwest Passage, was open and ‘fully navigable’ for the first time in its monitored history in 2007. This is perhaps the most extreme sign that the arctic is melting at an alarmingly fast rate.

Extreme summer temperatures are another obvious proof that global warming is real. Not only are the summers becoming unbearable in many regions around the world – they’re lasting longer and longer. In fact, here in the Blue Ridge foothills of the southeast US, the leaves are just now showing their bright autumn colors and the highs were in the 70’s last week. 10 years ago, short sleeves were out of sight before the beginning of October!

These unusual changes in climate have also been linked to more frequent and more intense forest fires across the world. Wildfires in the past decade have burned longer, destroyed more land, and happened more often than ever before. The US, especially the southeast and southwest, have been affected drastically by these fires. Fires are also starting in forests in the Amazon, Siberia, Greece, Indonesia, and a number of other countries around the globe.

Proof that global warming is real is all around us – from the extreme temperatures to the more and more frequent natural disasters. It is almost 100% likely that a big portion of this climate change is because of our own actions, habits, and lifestyles.

  1. Wow, everyone wants a simple answer to a complex question. Ok, here it is …yes, and no. Yes, global warming is real. It is documented that the temps have risen one degree in 150 years. That comes out to .007 degrees per year. The real questions are, is this increase natural or man-made? Can we actually change this trend, or is this just like us trying to change the path of a hurricane? We know there have been fluctuations in average temperatures as long as the Earth has existed. At the same time, we owe it to future generations to care for our planet. I believe we need to explore new energy sources, reduce consumption of resources, and, most importantly, DON'T PANIC! This planet is bigger than all of us, and will be here long after we are gone.

  3. I was hoping to actually learn something other than the standard generic statements. What are the real facts? The article states “Scientists have also discovered a correlation between these temperatures and the level of carbon dioxide (and more recently methane gas) in the atmosphere.” but it doesn't say what the statistical correlation was (.37 or .87 or -.5), nor does it mention what was actually correlated.

  4. I agree with rayne. we are in big trouble with global warming. once the average temp rises above 2 degrees celcius, around 12 degrees F, it is almost if not impossible to reverse the effects of global warming. Storms are getting stronger, sea levels are rising. there is so much proof that global warming is in effect. i will garauntee that the president will make a national address on the topic. take my word. remember this.

  5. I love global warming, I live in Cleveland and hope to have lake front property in the next 5 to 10 years,
although my winters are getting more brutal and summers shorter I dont know if I can stand it here that long. GW cant come fast enough for me keep up the roderic it keeps me all warn and fuzzy inside.

  8. the earth was warmer the the artic was tropical, dont you think the earth is just
continuing in its cycle and getting warm againa/

  9. have some faith, God didn't put us on this earth to either freeze or burn over, he has a plan.
all this stuff happening is just a sign that he is coming soon, the Bible says that there will be earth quakes and other things in various places so dont be scared, it's all in God's plan!
im a christian just to let you know! he he…

  10. NO he is not he is real how can people write a Enormous book ( the bible if you even know what that is) on someone that is just an allusion?!?!?!?!?! if you dont believe in him……well we all know were your going to spend internal life……

  11. how do you know this for sure just becasue you read a bible thats man made and could put his own thought in?

  12. I believe in global warming of not being a hoax, but I also believe strongly in the fact that the global warming crisis has been severly over exaggerated. Is the following facts above the absolute truth that global warming is real, or is it just a possible theory that needs further information?

  13. Ashlee, I am a Christian, but your comment is just embarrassing. First work on your vocabulary, then we'll discuss your theological arguments. I admire your faith, but there are ways to argue properly. Stay away from the Bible argument you made. Ever hear of Harry Potter? Star Wars? The Lord of the Rings? They come from a genre of fiction. That's when people write stuff that isn't real, and make it into a book. People are going to take what you said and laugh at it and say “Yeah, it's a book… of fiction.” You need to stop threatening people with Hell (very unlike Jesus) and you need to not sound so condescending (very unlike Jesus). And you might want to think about your “internal” life.

  14. Global warming is real even if it is a little over exaggerated. its still somthing we need to take seriously.. but maybe its just all part of the cycle of like dinosaurs.. although that sucks cuz that means we are dead. There is actual evidence that says the eath is warming up extremely. like go watch an inconvenient truth lol..

And if you are over fifteen years old, i am 17, then you have actually seen the effects of GW in your life time because summers used to be at most 30 degrees (i live in canada by the way) and now they are reaching scorching tempuratures of 45! thats outrageous! if there is somthing we can do to save our race, why not try it?

  15. “like go watch an inconvenient truth lol…”

Wasn't that movie sued because of false “facts” about global warming? Research the case on that issue.

I don't believe global warming is as big of an issue as people are trying to make it out to be. Can we affect our earth's atmosphere? I think so, yes. Is there enough evidence to prove the large claims of global warming true? I'd say no. The affects we have aren't large enough to cause the damage it seems like so many want to believe.

The earth has had MUCH hotter times than what we're going through. And aren't we actually overdue for an ice age, I don't know the details but I remember hearing claims of that too? It is natural for the earth's climate to go through cyclical changes. Just like the inconvenient truth was doing, I think there is a lot of contorted “truth”.

  16. not quite. if a man decides to go and kill another man just for fun, is that what god had planed for that mans destiny??i think god has a pathway set for us, but we can either choose to go on that path or steer away from it.

  17. I think your taking isolated events that have been happening for hundreds of years and bringing them forward as Doomy gloom talk to scare people into voting democrat. Floods, fires and hot summers have been happening FOREVER! People are just now taking them and using them as examples to support global warming.

  18. yeah I kinda belive in Global Warming, but for christ sakes the Earth is 30,000,000 yrs. old I think sooner or later the Earth is gonna give out,and die just like a human would, and besides I want to recycle, but my city doesn't have a recycle program

  19. ok 1 you cant just judge someone because of thier vocab.,and 2 you need to stop acting like something your not if you got a problem with what I am saying to you NOT MY PROBLEM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  20. Try 4,500,000,000 years old, or 4.5 billion years old.
On a separate note though, I must say I do believe in climate change, people simply cannot: 1) Drive millions and millions of cars, planes, etc. around. And 2) Cut down trees which absord alot of the CO2 and expect it will not have any effect (even tiny) on anything. One would think talking on the scale of the earth, even a tiny amount of change would have extreme effects.
Also, didn't we see problems over the '08 Olympic Games where Beijing (I think) had problems with the blanket of smog hanging around?
None of this was based on evidence like most people's opinions but it was just a sensible thought.

  21. get your facts straight big head the earth is 4.5 trillion to 4.6 trillion years old so I BET YOUR FEELIN PLAYED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  22. sorry about that last comment my sister did that oh and thx 4 agreeing with me YOU ROCK OUT LOUD you were agreeing with me right

  23. Yes yes the world whahaha is ending just as I planned you stupid humans dont know what us aliens are fixin to do to you well the swine flu (hint) might kill whoever read this so die you evil humans die I say Die whahaha!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! zzap FIRE I JUST KILLED A DAY WALKER MY CUZIN IS A VAMPIRE SHE'S gonna suck all the humans blood so aliens and vampires can take OVER THE WORLD WHAHAHA

  24. baylea. seriously.

    1. WHAT DOES GOD HAVE TO DO WITH THIS, REALLY?
WHY IS IT IMPORTANT IF HE EXISTS OR NOT; thats not what this article is about…
i am a strong christian, but that doesnt affect my views on global warming…

    2. you cant tell someone they cant judge someone based on their vocabulary and then go and criticize their name…

  25. honestly, im starting to get mad at your comments.

you mess something up yourself, and then you change your argument to make yourself sound superior.

  26. good job. seriously. first intelligent comment ive seen on this post that isnt biased. you took the facts, and you are easily the smartest on these posts

either everyone is saying it exists and we are all going to melt, or people are saying the world is cooling and we are going to freeze.

why cant it just stay normal?

  27. Yes, the Earth is warming, but it is part of a natural warming pattern that is temporary (as in a few centuries or less) and it is certainly not due to man-made emissions. The actual statistics, if anyone had cared to look at them, prove this fact.

In addition, the Earth is not warming as fast as this article might suggest. These incidents of high temperatures, long summers, and melting ice caps are clearly only showing one side of the story. For a local example, here in Chicago for nearly a month and a half straight the temperature was less than 20 degrees in the winter, and it was in the negatives for a few weeks straight.

In summary, people should do more research before they write or read articles like these.

  28. Though your observations might look reasonable at face-value, the problem with them is that they are not based on evidence, as you pointed out (which was good of you) in your last sentence.

Your first statement about cars polluting the Earth is correct, but the amount of carbon emissions resulting from them is not nearly enough to cause any change in the climate, at least not on the level of 'Global Warming'. Cities, such as Beijing, are obviously going to be quite a bit polluted due to the amount of emissions there, but if you put in perspective with the rest of the mass of the Earth, it becomes a lot smaller.

Your second claim, however, is redundant. Though I certainly don't support the mass deforesting that occurs, though much of it is for economical reasons, their loss will not majorly affect the Earth. Photoplankton on the surfaces of water bodies like lakes and oceans are responsible for 99% of the CO2 production that occurs on the Earth. Trees are responsible for less than 1% of it.

  29. I starting to get mad at you 1 because that person smiling jack is my bff and i was picking with him neel you retard god get your facts straight before you go of telling me what to do FAT HEAD

  30. Neel, please dont type my girlfriend again baylea ever again if u do i am reporting your ass!!!!

  31. what hell did you just fall out a tree most peopl here are not talking about the article bitch
